BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP)—Sean Shapert's penalty-kick goal with 10:06 to play in the first half gave Indiana a 1-0 victory over Howard University Sunday for the NCAA Division I soccer championship.
Shapert beat Bison goalkeeper Shaka Hislop with a hard shot to the right corner. The Hoosiers were awarded a controversial penalty shot after Howard's Michael Williams was called for tripping Han Roest just inside the penalty box.
Shapert's ninth goal of the season gave the No. 9 Hoosiers their third national title.
Indiana, playing the final on its home field, had an 11-9 edge in shots on goal and finished the season 19-3-3. Howard, which had a 24-game unbeaten streak snapped with the loss, wound up 19-1-1.
