1993 is a milestone year for the Shell companies in Jamaica. We are celebrating our seventieth year of commitment to the development of the individual and the wider community. Our celebration has carried the theme "We're not just in Jamaica. We're for Jamaica". A theme which could be equally applied to Shell's commitment to the Caribbean.

This year we are celebrating the fifth year of the prestigious Shell Caribbean Cup Football Tournament, a FIFA approved tournament now firmly on the calendar of football events in the region. The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) through its many associations within the region, Shell employees in the Caribbean and many other individuals and organizations have worked tirelessly to keep this tournament alive.

Shell Caribbean Cup is an ambitious undertaking. What has kept us all going is the vision of what such a tournament can do for football. Of greater importance, is the vision for our young people who are being given the opportunity to apply their skills and to acquire the personal discipline that can lift them to national and international prominence as representatives of their countries.

We are therefore proud that in this the fifth year of the competition, the Football Fraternity has decided to introduce drug testing for players. Personal discipline and integrity must be as much a part of the experience of the Shell Caribbean Tournament as is strength and determination on the field.

The organizing committee is to be commended for extending to western Jamaica, the excitement of the 1993 finals. In view of this major development, Shell welcomes on board a new sponsor - Pepsi - whose involvement adds considerable strength to this venture.

The Gleaner and Gatorade, along with subsidiary sponsors who are helping to provide transportation and accommodation have thrown their weight behind this the 5th renewal of Shell Caribbean Cup. At Shell, we are pleased that this tournament is a demonstration of the corporation that is necessary to develop at the national and regional level.

As general manager of the Shell Companies in Jamaica. I wish to thank all the organizations and the players who have brought the tournament to this point. I extend best wishes to all the teams participating in the finals. May the spirit of fairplay and good sportsmanship prevail and may football in the region continue to thrive as we make excellence our aim.
