Caribbean track stars advanced through elimination and semi-final heats although it was Trinidad and Tobago soccer squad who came closest to Jamaica as giant killers as in one of the toughest groups in the competition at Cartago, 120 miles from the capital, they held the highly favoured Mexicans to a one-all draw despite the loss of two players during the match.

Referee Jose Pichardo ordered Trinidad and Tobago's Selwyn Murren off the field for a dangerous foul after sixteen minutes and Keith Renaud was given marching orders for a major infringement just after the start of the second half. However the Trinidadians who led 1-nil at half time after a fifteen minute goal by Renaud managed to hang on for an important draw.
