The St. Louis Stars and New York Generals tied 2-2 in players ejected from the game because of fighting, but the Stars scored one more goal than their opponents and closed in on first place Oakland in the Western Division of the National Professional Soccer League.
The Stars beat the Generals 3-2 in one of the three games played last night. Chicago downed Baltimore 3-1 and Toronto trounced Los Angeles 6-1 in the others.
Norb Porgeba and Pat McBride of the Stars and Jan Steadman and Warren Archibald of the Generals were thrown out of the game after a fight erupted in the second half. Bora Kostic of the Stars did the most damage, though, scoring the winning goal in the game's 88th minute.
The triumph gave second-place St. Louis 124 points. Oakland leads with 145.
Chicago and Baltimore were tied 1-1 at halftime, but the Spurs rallied in the second half on goals by Ernie Winchester and Eric Barber.
George Bentivegna was the Toronto star, scoring twice. Mihalj Masmesaros had the only goal for the Toros.
