Jamaica-Trinidad series mooted

NEGOTIATIONS have started for a soccer tournament between four top schoolboy teams of Trinidad and Jamaica next January. If it comes off, the battle will be among Jamaica's Kingston College and Vere Technical and Trinidad's St. Benedict's and Fatima.

Man behind the move is Vere Technical coach Deryck Tomkinson and the idea is to stage the tournament to support the efforts to raise funds to help stage next year's British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

The proposed tournament will be on a round-robin basis over three nights and a trophy will be awarded to the champion team.

If it comes off, the tourney could prove a spectacular affair as both Trinidad teams are regarded as the best seen there in many years. In their college competition final in Trinidad two weeks ago, an estimated 50,000 spectators — the biggest crowd ever to watch a sporting event in Trinidad — turned up.
