NCAA Bars Howard Soccer Team From Title Matches

Howard University's soccer team, which was stripped of a national championship in 1971 because of an ineligible player, was barred from championship competition for the next two years by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the same reason: failing to report an ineligible player during the 1977 season.

Sylanus Orioikhi of Nigeria, Howard's leading scorer last season with 19 goals and eight assists, was identified as the ineligbible player this time.

Howard athletic director Leo Miles said when Orioikhi enrolled at the school in 1977 athletic officials were unaware that he previously attended a college in Colorado and was not an incoming freshman. When the discrepancy was discovered, Howard reported the matter "voluntarily" to the NCAA just before the playoffs and withdrew the team from championship play in 1977.

Howard's veteran soccer coach, Lincoln Phillips, said they won a championship and didn't get it.
