Talk about rising to a challenge. Last week Aston Villa manager John Gregory stated that he wanted Villa to play in Europe next year. That means that Villa has to win all there remaining games in order to reach that target. The Villa team responded by beating West Ham 2-0. Yorke had a good game with his first shot lifting over the crossbar and the other being tipped over. With the win Villa have 45 points and currently sit in ninth position.

Relegation beckons for Marcelle

To many Star Trek fans self destruction is the last resort when all other options have been exhausted. However, in the English Premier League self destruction is what will lead you back to the First division. That is something Barnsley is facing right now as a own goal ten minutes from time proved to be deadly for the Yorkshire club. The goal helped regional rivals Leeds United to a 2-1 win. Clint Marcelle came into the game in the 79th minute. The lost drops Barnsley to second to last in the table with 31 points. However, things are tight near the bottom with just three points keeping them from a place next season in the English top flight.

European place calls for Latapy

Boavista's rise up the table in the Portuguese first division has been astounding. A few weeks back they were just an average team. However, they are quickly becoming Portugal's hottest team. They defeated Salgueiros 3-0. Latapy came on in the final 25 minutes of the game. The win still leaves them in fourth place tied with Victoria Guimaraes on 46 points.

In the shooting range....

Leonson Lewis started for Chaves for the first time in a few weeks. Chaves defeated Varim 2-1. Jerren Nixon and FC Zurich continued there assault on a European place when they tied Servette 1-1 on Sunday.

Across the Atlantic...

Stern John, Ansil Elcock and the Columbus Crew completed a minor upset when they defeated MLS champs DC United at home 2-1. Both John and Elcock started for the Crew.

Brian Haynes and the Dallas Burn won there third game in a row by beating San Jose 3-2 in a shoot out. Haynes came on in the 75th minute in a 2-1 Dallas game. However, a San Jose goal seven minutes from time forced extra time and then a shoot out to determine the winner.

Both David Nahkid and Evans Wise started for New England in there game with Miami. However, they lost 2-1 to remain winless in just there second game of the MLS season.
