PORT OF SPAIN, Wed. —

Hundreds of people were trampled and many others injured here last night as police used teargas to break up violence accompanying a football match starring Brazilian soccer genius Pele.

The violence flared when crowds broke through police barriers as Pele's soccer team, Santos, arrived to play an independence anniversary soccer match with a Trinidad side.

As police began stemming the tide the fans started throwing bottles at them, hitting police Commissioner Eustance Bernard in the face.

The police then used teargas and men and women were seen jumping from the two-storey pavilions to the ground 30 feet below.
