Corinthians' Great Fight

Sheffield United vs CorinthiansThe programme for the Sheffield United versus Corinthians FA Cup-tie in 1931/32.

Sheffield United regard it as a happy augury that their first opponents were the Corinthians, who visited Bramall Lane in the corresponding round in 1925, when the United last won the Cup. A very poor account of the amateurs had got into circulation, but Sheffield were quickly disillusioned about a runaway victory, for although Dunne gave them the lead in seven minutes, the Corinthians were on terms at half-time, and before the Irish international won the match with his second goal, Shearer, the amateurs' Irish leader, had first wasted a glorious chance and then hit the framework of the goal when Smith was helpless. There were 28,000 spectators on the Bramall Lane ground, and they would certainly come away with a high opinion of the quality of amateur football.
