Minutemen in semis

BOSTON (UPI) - The Boston Minutemen advanced to the semifinal round of the North American Soccer League playoffs by defeating the Baltimore Comets 1-0 Thursday night in their quarterfinal game.

Boston midfielder Josef Jelinek scored on a 75-foot rising shot into the upper lefthand corner over the outstretched fingertips of Baltimore goalkeeper Lincoln Phillips. Minuteman goalkeeper Jan Michniewski recorded his third shutout of the season.

Northern Division champ Boston, in its first year in the league, outshot Baltimore 30-15. Philips had 11 saves before leaving the game in the 72nd minute, replaced by Alan Mayer who made four saves as Boston continued to press the attack. The Boston defense held league-leading scorer Pete Silvester to only one shot on goal.

The Minutement will play the Western-division champion, Los Angeles Aztecs, Saturday night. The winner of that game will advance to the championship final against either the Dallas Tornado or the Miami Toros.

The Minutemen broke the 100,000 attendance barrier when 9,713 fans attended Thursday night's game at Boston College's Alumni Stadium. They have attracted 106,124 to 11 games this year at BC Alumni Stadium.
